You can't let a good building go to waste, right? While running our homeschooling resource center in the youth building at Hopewell Baptist Church, we noticed that their preschool area was just sitting there doing nothing during the daytime!
We decided to use the space to create a primary school (K-3) starting in fall of 2017. Note: This is an actual school, NOT a homeschooling program. We hope to gradually expand the school by grade level.► Read more...
The school day will begin at 9:00 a.m. (students dropped off between 8:45 and 8:55); and last until 2:15. Children younger than six may be picked up at noon if you would prefer; tuition, however, will be the same either way.
It will be a very different sort of atmosphere. Inspired by the ideas of Charlotte Mason, coupled with the relaxed family environment we are known for, we hope to help children to live relaxed lives in a rich educational environment. If you are unfamiliar with the ideas of Charlotte Mason, you might find it helpful to read "For the Children's Sake" by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay.
We feature: lots of reading to the children; individualized instruction in the basics; projects; lots of music, art, and drama. Outdoor education and field trips (pending sufficient parental help!)... We believe that parents have the ultimate responsibility for their family's education, and strive to be good servants to the parents.
We do not believe in :common core; the need for accreditation/certification; busywork homework.
We do believe in: a balanced childhood, time at home to play, work with the family, and just be a child!
For more info, email Mary Hood,, firstname.lastname@example.org. Our next information night is Tuesday, July 18, 7:00 at the main church building at Hopewell Church, 78 Ridge Road, Canton ,Ga 30114. Between Canton and Woodstock, just off Bells Ferry.
We do not believe in the use of one boxed curriculum for the entire school. Our curriculum will consist of lots and lots of library books; an occasional workbook chosen specifically for an individual child to help him or her learn the basics; and a variety of hands-on experiences and projects.
We will have unit studies in social studies and science, and will let parents know by email which ones we are doing each month, so you can follow along and add things if you wish. We will also feature one artist or art form, and one composer a month.► Read more...
Our day will begin with opening ceremonies and a Bible story. The children will respond with drawing pictures and/or narrating the story. We will alternate periods of movement and activity with sit-down work. After the Bible story, we will be doing something active, such as folk dancing, for a few minutes. The morning snack break will be followed by 90 minutes of the basics, alternating between sit-down work and active projects. The majority of academics will be over by noon. The afternoon will feature 90 minutes of art, music, outdoor play, and use of the gymnasium in inclement weather. We intend to build an outdoor education area, including a garden, in the fall, and will be involving the children in the planning and construction.
Field trips, including visits to places like Red Top Mountain State Park and the usual zoos, museums, etc., will be done on many Fridays, pending sufficient parental help.
We plan to gradually expand this school, grade by grade, so that the oldest children will never have to leave unless they want to...but who would want to leave a spot that is this much fun?
We will not be giving any busy-work, workbook style homework. We want the children to have a childhood like the old days, with plenty of free time. However, we also believe in the children having work responsibilities in the home. As much as is possible given the compulsory attendance law, we want to enable parents to also take educational trips with their children, without counting it as an absence...since we believe life and education are really one and the same.
Tuition is $450/month, payable at the beginning of the month, for ten months (August-May). Second child in family is $425/month. Note that parents of children younger than six may decide to stay for only the morning and be done at noon; however the tuition will remain the same.
Application Fee $25...for processing application and conducting interview
Registration Fee...$100 for first child; $50 for second child. Necessary for paying our insurance.
We hope to avoid any further fees through having the school participate in a couple of fundraising activities over the course of the year. We do not want to nickel and dime you to death! In the absence of such fundraisers, additional fees would still be limited to things like field trip entrance fees or the very occasional purchase of a workbook or similar materials.
